Background
The Resilience Project - who we are and what we do
The Resilience Project is a youth-led community built and established by leading youth climate activists. We resource young people to become effective and resilient climate changemakers, for a sustainable future. We resource them through peer-support communities, intergenerational mentoring and the transformation skills required to catalyse inner and outer change. Our vision is a bigger, more inclusive and sustainable international youth movement resourced by connection, community and cooperation.
The Ambassador Programme
In 2024 The Resilience Project is piloting its first ever Ambassador Programme. This programme is for Resilience Project Alumni, that is, anyone who has previously been through one of our programmes (Resilience Circle co-hosts, Resilience Circle participants, International Board of Youth). This 8 month pilot will allow alumni to remain an active part of the Resilience Project community, deliver international Resilience interventions and build both personal and professional skills. Ambassadors will first be paired with an intergenerational mentor for 8 months whom they will meet online for monthly mentoring.
They will then attend either an online or in-person training weekend (depending on location) where they will be trained to facilitate a 10 week online peer support group called a Resilience Circle. Ambassadors will work in pairs to co-host their Resilience Circles. Following the training weekend, they will decide on the theme of their Resilience Circle e.g. Circle for young people in Kenya, Circle for young people attending COP, Circle for young People of Colour. Throughout the 10 weeks, Ambassadors will meet online with the Resilience Project team for coaching and support.
Should this pilot programme be successful, it will be rolled out annually, with each cycle running for 12 months, beginning in January.
The Mentoring Programme
Each Ambassador will be paired with an Intergenerational Mentor. One key challenge that young activists face is having to learn everything from scratch. This contributes to burnout as they are having to learn through trial and error. The aim of this programme is provide young activists with the opportunity to learn from those with years of experience.
We are aiming to recruit a diverse group of mentors, who represent a variety of backgrounds, specialisations and lived experience. The hope is that we will be able to pair Ambassadors with mentors who specialise in an area that is important to them.
Mentors will be provided with a mentoring handbook and a suggested curriculum. They will join a welcome call with all other mentors and the TRP team where they can ask questions and find out more details about the programme. Ambassadors will then meet with their mentors monthly online for 1 hour of mentoring between May and December 2024.
In addition, mentors will be able to opt in to delivering an online workshop to all Ambassadors in order for them to have the opportunity to learn from a variety of experts.
We are ideally looking for mentors aged over 35 to retain the Intergenerational element of the programme. We are open to mentors from a range of backgrounds, including but not limited to activism, organising, social entrepreneurship, business, coaching and psychology.
Who will you be mentoring?
Our alumni network consists of founders, authors, organisers, elected officials, influencers and more. For example, in the UK, two alumni organised Glasgow’s largest youth march, consisting of 300,000 people, at COP26; one was elected as one of the youngest ever Green Party Councillors in Bristol in 2021 and another set up an award winning social enterprise working to tackle the climate, health and housing crises. Internationally, our alumni are Prize winners (inc. Iris Prize), TedX speakers and published authors.
FAQS
Can I mentor more than one person?
Yes, you can mentor as many Ambassadors as you have capacity for. This is completely dependent on your capacity, there’s no pressure to mentor any more Ambassadors than you would like to.
What happens after the 8-month programmes?
The formal mentoring process ends after 8 months but independently of TRP you may continue a relationship if both the mentor and mentee agree. There is no commitment to continue after December 2024.
How much capacity will it take?
As a minimum, mentors will be required to attend a Welcome Call on the 30th April (or to watch the recording if you aren’t able to attend) and to meet with their mentees online for 1 hour per month from May-December 2024. Mentors will also have the opportunity to host an online webinar, workshop or talk about their area of expertise for the whole group of 20 Ambassadors. This is optional.
I’m not a trained psychologist. Is this a problem?
No. We have safeguarding protocols and can signpost to professionals. You don’t need to be a therapist, just a supportive human.
I don’t have experience in mentoring. Is this a problem?
No, you will be provided with a mentoring handbook and a suggested curriculum. You can follow this as closely as you like depending on your level of experience and comfort. You just need to be a supportive human with some experience to share with a young changemaker.
